FORMAL AND INFORMAL TEXTS

I am now going to show you two different ways to write a text. The two different strategies are called formal and informal writing. I will also write a summary of the differences between them. We had to choose a topic that was important for the society. I chose to write a little bit about poor children in Norway. I will write about the same topic in both texts so it will be easier to see the differences.

Some differences between formal and informal texts:

Formal:

-              Third person writing style.

-              A much more factual text.

-              Well structured.

-              Not a personal writing style.

Informal:

-              A much more personal style to write.

-              You can write in first, second and third person.

-              Simple sentences.

-              You can show emotion and feelings.

Formal:

Even though Norway has well economy and most of the residents have good economy, is it more poor children who live here now than before. For children, poverty is primarily about a lack of opportunities to participate on an equal basis with other children. Poor children in Norway are really often embarrassed to say that they can not go skiing because they can not afford it, so they make up an excuse so they do not have to explain anything any further. 4/10 poor children are immigrants in Norway and the number of poor people in Norway continues to rise.

Informal:

Norway is a rich country and I think that it is sad that almost 100.000 children in Norway are poor. I think that it should not be like this in such a modern and rich country. I read about a little girl, age 5. Her mother could not allow her to go to birthdays because they could not afford to use 100 NOK for a gift. The little girl had to stay home, when the other girls had dance lessons because her mother could not afford it. Like her mother said, they are not starving or anything, but the food is simple and the same almost every day.  I knew that some people in Norway have better economy than others, but I did not know that children could not go to birthdays because they could not afford a gift.

The first text is a formal text because, as you can see, I do not write in a personal style. The text is not based on my own opinions, but on facts.

The second text is an informal text because I write much more personal and I write with simple sentences.
